At the Singapore Researchers Global Summit on 21 September 2021, Minister for Education Mr Chan Chun Sing announced that MOE would set aside $457M to support Social Science and Humanities Research from FY2021-FY2025. The announced funding was a 31% increase compared to the previous five year tranche.
We want to see more research that cuts across traditional STEM and SSH disciplinary boundaries. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of interdisciplinary research. While the biomedical scientists can sequence the virus and develop vaccines, we need the behavioural scientists to help us better understand the science behind the impact of COVID-19 on our well-being.— Minister Chan on the importance of interdisciplinary research
Minister Chan also also announced the new SSRC Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF), aimed at supporting outstanding Singaporean researchers pursuing their PhDs or post-doctorate stints overseas. The GRF complements existing support such as the Early Career Award under the MOE Singapore Teaching and Academic Research Talent (START) scheme, as well as the seed grants and mentorship support offered by the Autonomous Universities.
This initiative offers a boost to those Singaporeans who have made the bold move to embark on a research career on their own... address(ing) a gap that currently exists with our overseas Singaporeans and aims to build bridges with them.— Minister Chan on the new Graduate Research Fellowship
